We’ve all had those emails from the ‘SEO Expert’ guaranteeing a top ten ranking on Google, but when it comes to getting on the first page of Google, and quickly, its actually not rocket science, and something anyone can achieve if they follow some simple steps….
- Keep your content real, and fresh. You hear a lot of SEO experts tell you that keywords are dead, however this is not the fact. Google still need to know everything it can about your website before it can successfully get your website ranking high, and the information it needs comes mainly from two factors…authority, and content. If the content is natural, and providing it is not overstuffed with keywords but contains a few, it has a good chance of ranking well. The key is to ensure the content has value for your audience, and is written like you are talking to your audience in real life. You wouldn’t fill your sentences with keywords if you talked to them, so don’t do the same on your website.
- Treat your website like a fitness workout. You know what it’s like when you go to the gym…if you don’t go enough you don’t get the results, and if you overexert yourself all in one go you’ll just end up in pain, with no gain. We all know regular, consistent gym training leads to good results, so treat your site the same and give it a regular SEO workout. Post articles/news of interest regularly on your website blog, share this with your social fans, and rather than write a bunch of content all in one go, schedule it so that Google sees that you are actively and regularly updating information, giving your site a better ranking over the static sites.
- Backlinks are not dead.
Some SEO gurus will tell you backlinking is dead, however if you link your website to a high-value site with original content and good authority as well, you’ll find by linking to the right sites can still increase your authority as you are foreseen as being in the ‘right neighbourhood’. Remember when you used to hang out with the popular kid at school to look popular?, well that is backlinking in a nutshell, and it works.
By the same token, backlinking to poor quality sites can have a negative effect for your rankings, so choose your backlink ‘buddies’ wisely.
- Connectivity is the key
Social Media is one of the best ways to gain authority. By writing a blog post on your site, and sharing it via your social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+, it not only gets you a direct link back to your website from the leading sites in the world, but also has the potential to drove more traffic from the social channels to your site. Now, if you add a call to action on the blog post, such as a contact enquiry, special offer, etc, you keep the audience on your site longer, lowering your bounce rate, and therefore Google perceive e your site has value to your visitors, and gives you a higher authority ranking.
- Monitor your website rankings regularly.
Ensure you have Google Analytics integrated with your website, and regularly check to see what people are clicking on, what time of the day they are viewing it, and ideally their demographics. This can greatly assist in writing great content aimed directly at the audience that shows the most interest. Your visitors will like you even more, and Google will become your new best friend if you keep feeding them valuable content on your site.
- Refresh your SEO
You may have covered every inch of your website’s optimisation, but once you have it done it is recommended that you revise the SEO descriptions and title tags occasionally. By doing this tells Google that you are actively updating content and are being proactive. Google love fresh content, and even if they are small changes, it is enough to refresh your sitemap that Google reads.
- Check your competitors rankings
Using software such as Moz or SEO Profiler, you can effectively ‘spy’ on your competitors rankings and what they are doing to get these rankings, to a point. SEO Profiler allows you to run full reports on your major online competitors and find their strengths and weaknesses, and then act on it. It could be their backlinks, their connections, their content or server speed. Find it and exploit it to your advantage, and you’ll outrank them in no time.
These helpful cost-effective tips will help get you ranking on Google fast, and get you on that first page. Just keep it real, keep it regular and you’ll be there before you know it.
