When it comes to any business, online or otherwise, one of the most important factors is your ROI.
If you are spending a decent amount of money, and considerable time, to set up your business correctly, you need to consider your marketing. And one of the most cost effective forms of marketing to reach a targeted mass is through online marketing.
You’ll find countless guides, courses and videos to online marketing on the web, and if you are just starting out it can be daunting, so this following guide is designed to be a beginners guide to online marketing, getting you started with promoting your business, services and products easily and cost-effectively….
BEGINNERS GUIDE TO ONLINE MARKETING
1 – Know your Target Audience & What You Can Offer Them.
Before working on your online marketing strategy, you need to know your target audience.
Do some competitor research, find out what people want, if they would use your services, and look at how you can refine your branding to suit your audience before you start your marketing strategy, to ensure your campaign will work it’s best.
2 – Creating a Marketing Strategy
Ok, So you’re ready to start your marketing plan. As an online business you want to cover all the bases to maximize your potential. This should include SEO, social media, online advertising, email marketing, online PR and even a little old-school marketing
There are plenty of aspects to cover, but with a good strategy you’ll find a nice balance of each will work well, ensuring you don’t need to pay too much for the Pay Per Click advertising if you are cross-promoting with social media and spending just a little time each week on good SEO strategies.
3 – Generating Traffic & Building your Audience
There are a number of ways to generate traffic to your website or blog.
- Pay Per Click – Facebook or Google Ads. Good results but can be costly.
- Organic Traffic – Search Engine Optimisation, which is free and one of the easiest ways to generate traffic.
- Social Media – easy, but the click through rate is only around 5%
My recommendation is to learn the basics of SEO for WordPress, which you’ll find a lot of information about on Maximum Web Success, as this should drive around 70% of your traffic if done correctly. Then back it up with a little paid advertising and social media and watch the traffic flow!
4 – Paid Advertising Works!
Well, as mentioned above, Pay-Per-Click advertising works well, but to ensure you get the most bang for your buck, it pays to define and aim for your target audience. This will hopefully not only get you more clicks to an audience seeking your niche product, but it will also reduce your cost-per-click rate. You’ll find if you do this your advertising cost per click can be as little as a few cents per interaction!
5 – Email Marketing
Email Marketing is a great way to reach a target niche audience, but you first have to get them on your mailing list!
Sign up with your email marketing service of your preference, such as Mailchimp, Active Campaign, Aweber or Infusion Soft, and then add their signup form into your WordPress site. Most now have a plugin to make this super-easy. You can often also add it into your Facebook page, or set up a lead page on your site and drive visitors to sign up via some pay per click marketing. As you grow your list get into the habit of emailing them and connecting with them regularly, but not too often that you are annoying them. A nice mix of free info, giveaways and a little subtle marketing will familiarize you with your audience, making it easier to sell to them.
6 – Utilising Affiliate Marketing to Increase Sales
Affiliate Marketing is not for every business, but if it suits your business, having others sell your products for you in exchange for a small commission per sale makes reaching a wider audience easy.
7 – Use SEO to drive your organic rankings
SEO (or search engine optimisation) is one of my favourite ways of growing traffic, and it is actually much easier than you think. You can actually learn how to do this yourself, as I’ll explain throughout my blogs and my online coaching I provide. I have sold millions of dollars worth of all sorts of products by implementing around 30 minutes of SEO per week to each of my sites. Find out more and see for yourself how easy it can be.
8 – Utilising easy PR methods
Word of mouth and press releases have long been a great way of promoting businesses, especially when it is via trusted publications such as the NY Times or the Huntington Post . These days while a press release in a magazine paper may not be ideal to reach a wide audience, there are ways to reach a global audience through their online publications.
9 – Create your social media strategy
Your social media pages are a very good way to create brand awareness, share your blog posts and drive more traffic to your website. Ensure your online social media channels are well branded, have well written bios and info about your business, and most importantly link back to your website.
10 – Ensure your website is designed for audience reach
A website is like a toolbox…it’s only as useful as the tools you put into it. When building a website ensure you structure and design it with your audience in mind. This means clear navigation, call to action on what you want your audience to click on, clean, unique and interesting text and images, and ensuring people have easy access to contact you for more information.
