HOW DO I START BLOGGING?
Whether it’s for fun, or to make passive income, it’s time to start blogging!
So you may have heard that creating a blog can be fun, and that it can also make you a nice little passive income. Both are true, but to make it rewarding you need to follow a few steps to ensure the success of your site.
These steps are actually quite simple, and something pretty much anyone can do. You don’t need to be a web genius, or a designer, and you don’t even really need to be able to type well. Getting started is easy, and this short 4 step guide will give you all the information you need to get a blog up and running in no time!
CREATE AN ONLINE BUSINESS PLAN
If you are looking at creating a blog to make income you need to have a plan. Even if you are doing it for fun, you want people to read your blog, and creating a basic strategy is important.
REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME
If you are looking at setting up a standalone blog, you will need a domain name. Registering a domain name is simple and takes just a few minutes. Go to Godaddy.com and simply start searching for available names. You may not always find the name you want is available as the internet is a big place, so think of a few ideas as fall back names, and then be prepared to spend some time searching.
Read my blog on finding a good domain name, and this might help you find one that will work best for you.
Once you have found the domain and it is available, you’ll need to purchase it, and then once you receive notification via email that it is secured, you move onto the next step…web hosting.
With any website or blog, it needs to be hosted somewhere, and there are plenty of web hosting providers available, so compare them for prices as well as what they offer. For example, you may find one at a good price, but only gives you 5GB of storage. If your blog starts turning into an online success you may quickly outgrow the hosting space, so keep this in mind. BlueHost and Hostgator are two of the largest and most trusted hosting companies in the USA but also service the rest of the world. Their plans are both very similar in what they offer both in services, reliability and price.
You can also check out my own hosting company in Australia, called Hosteasy.com.au. I offer very competitive hosting plans and a great team of technical support staff 24/7 online or by phone. And as the prices are in Australian dollars you’ll find it works out dirt-cheap if you live in the USA.
Check them out and compare them, and see what suits you best.
Once you have set up your hosting, you’ll need to configure it to your domain name. To do this, go into your domain name control panel with the details provided when you registered your domain name. Click on the domain name and look for DNS (domain name server) settings. You’ll need to change these settings to the ones provided by your hosting company. They are usually a small group of numbers or a a server address, eg, NS1.domainserver.com, NS2.domainserver.com. Change the existing records to the ones provided and then anywhere between a few minutes to 24 hours the details will be active and you can move onto installing your blog.

SETTING UP YOUR BLOG
Now this is where you need to put on your nerd cap and install WordPress, which is the blog software into your hosting server. You can download WordPress from WordPress.org and upload it via your hosting Cpanel, or you can look for the Application installation button in the backend of your Cpanel and it will install in one click. Personally, I recommend doing a manual installation as you have more control of what is being installed, but this is up to you.
Once it is installed you are ready to start getting down to business and working on adding content to your new blog!
When it comes to a successful blog, quality content is king. Don’t try and write your articles filled with keywords you want to be found for, and don’t duplicate content found on another website. This is your blog, so write it naturally from your own content, and this will be what makes your site unique.
